My journey in growing my own food

Honest, UK-tested guides to help you grow fruit, vegetables, and herbs from windowsill pots to allotments.

Geog Allerton in his garden holding vegetables

I’m Geoff Allerton, a 56-year-old retired teacher from the East Midlands with mud under my fingernails and a lifelong love for all things green and growing. Over the years, I’ve turned my modest back garden into a lively allotment, filled with everything from fiery chillies and juicy tomatoes to crisp lettuce and sweet, sun-ripened strawberries.

If you’ve ever wanted to grow your own food — whether it’s just a pot of herbs on the windowsill or a patch of vegetables — I’m here to help. This site is my way of sharing what I’ve learned, sometimes the hard way, about getting the best from your patch of earth, however big or small it may be.

Here you’ll find honest guides rooted in real experience and a genuine passion for nature. I’ll show you the simple steps to get started, the tricks that have saved me from many gardening mishaps, and a few stories from my own journey — tea breaks included.

For me, gardening is not just a hobby. It’s a way to reconnect with the world outside our windows, eat a bit better, and slow down in a busy world. Whether you’re new to growing or already have plenty of experience, I hope you’ll find something useful here, and maybe a little inspiration to get your hands dirty.

This website is now my way of giving back. My son builds and maintains my website; I write the guides!

Happy growing,
Geoff
